The Bowali Visitor Centre near Jabiru in Kakadu National Park is located 253 km from Darwin in Northern Territory Australia via the Arnhem Highway entrance. If travelling by road, you should allow 3 hours travelling time from Darwin.

Only 40 off the Arnhem highway on the left and about 10klm from Jabiru- Sealed wide road all the way to Ubirr in Kakadu National Park

How To Get To Ubirr Rock

Turn north off the Arnhem Highway 1km west of the Kakadu Highway intersection and travel a further 39km. Over 5,000 recorded and identified Aboriginal art sites, Kakadu contains an uniqueartistical living cultural landscape of Aboriginal art. Ubirr and Nourlangie Rock are two of the most pristine public sites that feature Aboriginal Cultural Rock Art and previous dwelling shelters. Ubirr is 39 kilometres from Jabiru which is Kakadu National Parks main town, and is not always accessible during the wet season.

The dry season which is approximatley which is classed generally as May - October each year. Though in current year the wet has not set in till late December or January and then finishes mid April.

The drive was very scenic with jagged ancient rock escarpments on the right towering over our 4WD and on the left low lying floodplains with numerous flocks of birds.

Where Is Ubirr Rock

Ubirr Rock is located in the North-East section of Kakadu. This region is situated on the borderline of 3 differnt habitats and is extremely rich in wildlife. It is also an area that is extremely rich in Aboriginal Rock art with some sites possibly dating back tens of thousands of years. The artsites in this area are magnificent and are probably some of the most detailed paintings that you will see on your tour in Kakadu.

Blog: During the Tropical Summer season of Novemeber to march you may experience the road to Ubirr closed. This is because there are waterways usually dry from May to October that sit across the road Ubirr in Kakadu National Park. See the sign on the right. We drove down in late September when these photo's were taken and it was as you say 'dry as a bone'. The drive was very scenic with jagged ancient rock escarpments on the right towering over our 4WD and on the left low lying floodplains with numerous flocks of birds. The drive from the Arhnem Highway turn took about an hour as we tended to drive rather slow and stop numerous times for photo shoots. The biggest surprise was before Ubirr is Border Store and Cahill Crossing both great spots to investergate. Oh we heard from the Border Store folks a budget backpackers is to be built their early next year but no details yet.
Ubirr Road sign

Blog: The one thing I keep finding as a pleasurable experience is something so simple you don't notice. That's the signage. You would think in a national Park the size of Kakadu you would be paranoid of getting lost. Everywhere we went their clear precise signage in natural colours to belnd into the beackground of the landscape.I really must take my hat off to the National Parks Commission of Northern Territory.

The track is very easy to stroll along as you can see to Ubirr.

Walking - The first section to the top of Ubirr and the Aboriginal Art sites along the way.A one kilometre circular at Ubirr, will let you view incredible Aboriginal rock art sites along the way. Here we show the beginning of the walk from the carpark to the first rock art site, we found it a very easy stroll.

Sandstone and River Bushwalk
This walk is in the Ubirr area and starts at the Bardedjildji walk. The whole walk is 6.5 kilometres and features fantastic views of Cat Fish Creek, the East Alligator River and Kakadu's floodplains, billabongs and sandstone rock formations. Allow four hours.

Ubirr Public Toilets
Apollo 2/3 berth campervans rentals at Ubirr Car Park
The first major rock art site is a stroll from the carpark of around 10-15 minutes

The Section Towards The End Of The Walk To Reach The Lookout At Ubirr

You can go further and embark on the 250 metre moderately steep climb to the top of of a rocky lookout area of Ubirr rock. Here you will be gaze ove rthe wilderness landscape surrounds of over the Nardab floodplain. Allow at least 1 hour for this walk.

A lot of folks ask us how hard it is to climb to the top. The best thing is to look at these pictures. Note the 'Yellow Triangle' markers embedded into the rock to guide you.

Blog: You know what we found great. When we got out of our car their was an Aboriginal National Park Ranger walking around and he was ever so helpful. He even walked with us some of the way and told us about the rock wallabies peaking out of the rock formations a few 100 metres up the path.

Then later we met a lady National Park Ranger who stopped to offer us advice. It was so refreshing to have those folks there. I am not sure when they are there but if you lucky enough to meet them they have a wealth of knowledge to share with you.

The signs - again signs at all the stragic places advising us when the next talk was and what talk wa sto be held. Fantastic for those selfdrive folks. You can see for yourself from some of the photo's I took here.

Blog: Oh the most important thing to remember is there is a public phone at Border Store (East Alligator) - At Boderstore there is also a great seating area out the front of the shop and really nice folks serving.

The must is the toitlet across the road near the ppublic phone. Careful it's the famous 'Drop Toilet'. If you don't know what that is then i will leave it up to your imagination - it's self explanatory.

Accross the road from borderstore is Cahill Crossing -actually a stroll thru a track of about 300m to the crossing.

Kakadu National Park - Seasons

But Australia's Kakadu sees seasons of varied extremes -- so varied, in fact, that the park's longtime aboriginal inhabitants have divided the year into six distinct seasons.
Kakadu Seasons - Gunumeleng Pre-Monsoon Storm Season - Gunumeleng, from mid-October to late December, may in fact last from a few weeks to several months.
Kakadu Seasons - Gudjewg - Monsoon Season - Gudjewg, from January to March, can be described as the 'true' wet season.
Kakadu Seasons - Banggereng - Knock 'em down storm Season - Banggerreng, in April, is the season when the rain clouds have dispersed and clear skies prevail.
Kakadu Seasons - Yegge - Cooler but still humid Season - Yegge, from May to mid-June, is relatively cool with low humidity.
Kakadu Seasons - Wurrgeng - Cold Weather Season - Wurrgeng, from mid-June to mid-August, is the 'cold weather' time; humidity is low, daytime temperatures are around 30°C and night-time temperatures are around 17°C.
Kakadu Seasons - Gurrung - Hot Dry Weather - Gurrung, from mid-August to mid-October, is hot and dry.
